Screen Innovations Showcases FlexGlass Bendable Rear-Projection Screen at ISE 2023

SI’s FlexGlass rear-projection screen offers integrators a highly durable, flexible, and bendable screen material that’s less expensive and easier to install and ship than typical rigid glass projection screens.

Austin, TX (January 26, 2023) — Screen Innovations (SI), a leading manufacturer of optical screen and shade materials, demonstrates at ISE 2023 in Stand #2K500, the installation versatility of its FlexGlass rear-projection screen material. SI’s FlexGlass re-invents rear-projection screens by providing integrators with a surface that’s durable yet bendable boasts a low profile of just 2-1/2 millimeters thick, and is available in sizes up to 30,785 millimeters wide by 2,616 millimeters tall.

These features make FlexGlass a highly versatile rear-projection screen, supporting applications including digital signage, projection blending, short-throw projection, and as a traditional rear-projection surface. Completely bendable, FlexGlass can be configured in a number of ways, such as an S-Shape against a curved wall and even a 360-degree circle. FlexGlass is designed and engineered with ambient light-rejecting properties and to eliminate hot spotting that can often occur with rear-projection installations. Engineered from the same material as bulletproof glass, FlexGlass is extremely durable for use in any environment.

Plus, due to its flexible composition, FlexGlass can be rolled up for shipping for delivery to the job site, minimizing the cost and labor typically incurred when shipping and handling a standard rigid rear-projection screen.

“We thought of everything when developing FlexGlass, says SI CEO Ryan Gustafson. “It suits any rear-projection application, offers unique configuration options, features state-of-the-art screen technologies, and is simpler and easier to ship and install than its competition.”

FlexGlass is just one of many SI screen solutions showcased at ISE 2023, including Solo 3, SI’s new designer line of stylish indoor and outdoor motorized projection screen cassettes; and legacy favorites, such as Black Diamond and Zero-G

FlexGlass in the Field
Exhibiting the remarkable versatility of FlexGlass are two distinctly different installations of the product. FlexGlass was recently utilized on the set of “Star Trek: Picard” as the main console on the bridge of the series’ U.S.S Stargazer. Able to curve to fit the parameters of the set design, FlexGlass afforded an installation-friendly solution that was also able to maintain bright, vivid imagery despite high ambient light levels. Applications of FlexGlass will be even more prominently displayed during Season 3. Read about the project here and see an image of the Stargazer consoles comprising FlexGlass here.

The bendability of FlexGlass came in handy once again in a project spearheaded by the systems integration firm Wipliance. In this case, FlexGlass was used as a “virtual reality window” to display to prospective buyers of luxury high-rise condo units the outdoor view from any of the upper-level residences. As the centerpiece of the developer’s sales center, the 183-inch FlexGlass screen and the images presented on it helped seal many deals. Read more about it here

Screen Innovations Introduces All New Designer Line of Indoor and Outdoor Projection Screens

SI’s refined Solo 3 motorized projection screen cassettes blend seamlessly into indoor and outdoor environments, offering a multitude of customization, integration, and installation options.

Austin, TX (January 16, 2023) — Screen Innovations (SI), a leading manufacturer of screen and shade solutions, redefines big-screen home entertainment with Solo 3, a re-envisioned line of design-centered motorized projection screen cassettes that discreetly blends into surrounding indoor and outdoor environments. The clean, sharp lines of the self-contained cassette complement trending contemporary and minimalist home designs.

Unlike most other motorized projection screen cassettes, Solo 3 is manufactured as a visually flawless unit with no typical demarcations of the end caps. Units come powder-coated in white, black, or painted to match the surrounding surface. Alternatively, when mounted above the ceiling, the entire cassette beautifully vanishes into the architecture. The new Solo 3— available in 375, 575, and 675 cassette sizes— replaces SI’s legacy 3 and 5 Series motorized projection screen lines. The stylish design attributes of Solo 3 help systems integrators appeal to the discerning tastes of clients who want an immersive, dynamic entertainment experience of a big screen that won’t compromise the interior or exterior aesthetics.

Installation and programming ease is equally important to system integrators; the 575 and 675 Solo 3 models accomplish this, thanks in part, to the inclusion of a newly designed intelligent brain known as Moab. “Mother of all Boards,” this advanced 485-based control board enables faster programming of setpoints, rotation, and motor reset; it automates discovery and programming of keypads and remotes; and provides seamless, customizable integration with third-party control systems.

Designed and engineered by SI, Moab features numerous inputs and outputs to support a wide range of 485-based automation and control configurations and simplify the commissioning of screen settings with other control devices such as SI keypads. Built into the eye-catching translucent housing of Moab, which may be purchased separately for programming assistance, are 485- and dry contact ports, 12-volt triggers, and IR receivers. All programming can be accomplished using Moab without a computer or software.

While Moab is tucked neatly and securely inside the Solo 3 575 and 675 motorized projection screen cassettes, systems integrators can easily access it, as well as the internal motor, cabling, and screen material, through Solo 3’s unique removable fascia. Even when the Solo 3 cassette is mounted, systems integrators can quickly access the internal components to program, level the projection fabric and readjust settings.

Solo 3 is suitable for a wide range of applications, as the cassette accommodates SI’s many projection screen materials: This includes short-throw screen material for small spaces, Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) materials for areas illuminated by an abundance of natural and artificial light, acoustically transparent screens for concealing speakers, and twin-view which presents images on both sides of the material for a 360-degree view.

The Solo 3 cassette may be preinstalled during construction (with the cassette and tube as separate pieces); this noteworthy, deconstructed design makes the Solo 3 lighter and easier to handle, requiring less muscle, manpower, and time to install than previous models. The Solo 3 375 cassette may be powered by a rechargeable lithium battery for applications where running wires is more difficult than typical projects. The lithium battery can be charged manually via SI’s revolutionary recharging wand, or energy harvested by a forthcoming integrated solar panel for outdoor applications.

“We’ve taken the best features of our most popular motorized solutions and applied them to our signature Solo 3 motorized screen assembly,” says SI CEO Ryan Gustafson. “Thanks to all the feedback from our dealers and customers, we hit the nail on the head with this total refresh, which gives systems integrators, designers, architects, and builders an easy, effective, and revolutionary way to bring big-screen entertainment anywhere, inside or outside the home. The home entertainment trend shows no sign of slowing, and Solo 3 strives to help our dealers capitalize on this burgeoning market.”

SI Screen Helps Sell Properties at Luxury Seattle High Rise

Designed to seal the deal, a 183-inch FlexGlass screen presents to prospective buyers, images captured by a drone from Spire’s coveted upper-level units.

The Challenge
One of the biggest selling features of the luxury condominiums occupying Seattle’s iconic high-rise, Spire, is the panoramic views of the city skyline and waterfront from many of the upper-level units. The visual perspective differs slightly among each residence; from the floor-to-ceiling window in one condo, the main attraction might be Mount Baker— in another Puget Sound. The scenery is a key differentiator to prospective buyers— a dealmaker or -breaker— but had been difficult for the property developers to convey during the construction of the forty-two-story, 440-foot-tall building.

Rather than risk losing a sale by leaving the spectacular panorama to the imagination of buyers, the property developers enlisted the help of systems integration firm Wipliance to integrate a visual sales tool into its sales center that would display views from any unit of interest while construction continued. “Many of the units were two or more years from completion,” says Wipliance project manager and systems designer Cameron Alavi. “The developer felt that by showcasing this crucial component buyers would be more inclined to put down a deposit.”

The SI Solution
Wipliance conceptualized and pitched the idea of a virtual reality window to other developers of other high-rise residences in the past; Spire was the first to bite. A centerpiece of its sales center, the virtual-reality window brings the cityscape to life on a 183-inch Screen Innovations FlexGlass screen. Wipliance chose a screen size similar in dimension to the residences’ actual windows and worked with a local builder to construct a standalone cabinet to seamlessly frame the screen and house an Ultra-Short Throw Epson projector behind the FlexGlass. “The combination of FlexGlass and an Ultra-Short Throw projector was ideal for this application,” says Alavi. “The flexible FlexGlass was much easier to handle and install than a comparable-size rigid screen in a constrained space like this. We were able to house both the projector and screen neatly inside the same cabinet where light is controlled and allows prospective buyers to stand directly in front of the screen to watch the presentation without blocking the projected image.”

Spire sales center visitors use a mobile app to select a condo of interest; recorded footage captured earlier by a drone appears on the screen. Buyers can compare the views from as many units as they want.  “This streamlines the purchasing process tremendously; buyers don’t have to wait for construction of the unit to be complete to see what the view is like,” Alavi continues. “We hope this sets a new benchmark for luxury condo sales.” It seems to be working, “Every time we visited the Design Center, there was a broker utilizing the screen for clients and we had several other area developers who had dropped in asked us for our business cards.”

In the meantime, the innovative, custom-built virtual reality-window helped Wipliance get its foot in the door elsewhere at the luxury property. The team installed a 110-inch Black Diamond screen in Spire’s theater room for all residents to enjoy and offers an optional upgrade package that includes motorized SI shades, automation, and home entertainment systems to occupants.

Screen Innovations’ Slate Screen Stands the Test of Time

This magnificent media room doubled in size, but the original 133-inch Slate screen didn’t budge.

The Challenge
A dramatic room transformation often calls for an AV update; when a room is stripped down to the studs, how could you not install a bigger projection screen?  Although granted an amazing opportunity to upsell their client, the integrators at Elite Audio Video in McKinney, Texas, elected to stand by the tried-and-true Slate screen from Screen Innovations that previously served the room so well. “We had installed a 133-inch Slate acoustically-transparent screen in the home theater originally. Neither the owner nor our team saw any reason to replace it. He was extremely happy with the size and imaging from day one, so we kept it,” explains the owner of Elite Audio Video, Justin Dohman.

Plus, the Elite Audio Video team needed to focus on other aspects of the remodel: the entire room would be reconstructed and redesigned, adding significant square footage to the existing footprint. “The owner wanted a more open, spacious feel, with a new bar area, complemented by a 75-inch Sony display, and a third panel of fiber optic stars added to the ceiling,” says Dohman. “What he didn’t want to change is the screen or the projector! It stood the test of time; it would also stand up to all the extra LED lighting we installed during the renovation.” The SI Slate screen, along with all other AV components, was removed temporarily from the space during the remodel, reinstalled and recalibrated afterward.

The Solution
Elite Audio Video had the unique opportunity to do the same job twice, yet thanks to their “future-proof” approach to AV, most of the original equipment passed muster for the second iteration of this contemporary, cutting-edge media room. Natural sunlight and color-changing RGB lighting dominate the space per the owners’ request, making Slate’s Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) properties and high gain, a huge benefit. The Slate material is so effective at rejecting light, Elite Audio Video was able to deliver an extra visual punch by framing the screen with LED tape lighting. The owner can alter the hue on a whim from a Control4 Neeo remote, while the projected image stays sharp and crisp. The screen’s acoustical transparency further suited the owner’s sense of style. The Origin Acoustics speakers easily tucked in the wall behind the screen material, maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic and making the on-screen action totally immersive.

The screen and JVC projector spring to life at the tap of a button of the Neeo remote, while the lights adjust to the entertainment du jour. For the Buffalo Bills football player, footage from past games often takes center stage, accentuated by signature red and blue lighting. A “Party” button offers a rainbow of hues from which to choose, and “Movie” fades all but the LED tape lighting around the screen, illuminating a vibrant blue hue. No matter what the JVC projector throws at the screen or how brightly the room lights shine, SI’s Slate acoustically transparent, Ambient Light Rejecting screen delivers an outstanding entertainment experience— for the second time around.

Screen Innovations Brings Decorative Twists, Installation-Friendly Features to Motorized Shading Solutions

Designed with the needs of integrators, designers, and architects in mind, SI’s next-generation Nano 2 streamlines fabric swaps, leveling, and smart home integration while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.

AUSTIN, TX — Whether Screen Innovations (SI) introduces a novel product category or adds cutting-edge features and capabilities to their existing line, SI is insistent that innovation never stops. The premier shade and screen manufacturer continues to push technological and design boundaries with the launch of a new and improved motorized shading cassette, Nano 2. This smart, stylish solution embodies a suite of revolutionary new features in direct response to requests from dealers and maintains the same sleek, modern aesthetic that has made the Nano line a favorite among systems integrators, designers, and end-users alike.

An enhancement especially helpful to integrators, designers, and architects is the Nano 2’s removable front cover which provides easy access to the motors, technology, and shading fabric inside the cassette. This feature enables leveling adjustments, maintenance, and fabric swaps to be handled easily without detaching the cassette from the window. The Nano 2 motor as well as power and control cables can be removed from the mounted shading cassette for service. Other refinements enable smoother, quieter raising and lowering of the shade and quicker programming and integration with other 485-controlled devices and systems.

“This product transformation demonstrates SI’s commitment to evolving and advancing its motorized shading solutions to meet the needs of integrators, designers, architects, and window covering specialists,” explains SI CEO Ryan Gustafson. “We focused on the technology inside and the cosmetics outside to create a one-of-a-kind product that gives our dealers an edge when bidding and completing projects. It helps position SI as a key player in the window fashion and interior design industry.”

The Nano 2’s rich feature set is built into SI’s 275, 375, 475 and Duo cassettes. The new Nano 2 cassettes mirror SI’s original Nano cassette, lending to a clean, consistent aesthetic in projects where both versions are employed.
