CEDIA Headquarters Reference Home Theater Powered and Protected by Torus Power

CEDIA Headquarters Reference Home Theater Powered and Protected by Torus Power

Custom Torus Power All-in-One isolation transformer converts 480V 3-phase industrial power into 120V and protects high-performance gear in the new CEDIA Reference Theater.

When CEDIA decides to put a reference home theater inside their new headquarters, which also houses a state-of-the-art experience center and training facility, the association knew it must meet high expectations. After all, the professional organization that represents the custom electronics industry has an obligation to create a best-in-class cinema, with every detail meticulously designed, and an exceptional experience delivered. It stands to reason then, that the integrator on the project should be a renowned industry name with extensive knowledge of the best solutions to meet any challenge.

The Erskine Group was chosen to design and install the 9-seat Reference Cinema Home Theater in CEDIA’s new headquarters in Fishers, Indiana. “We were able to provide a turnkey project, completing the construction, design, installation, and calibration,” says Dennis Erskine, president of The Erskine Group.

The cinema includes leading high-performance brands, including Procella loudspeakers, Trinnov Audio Altitude32 AV preamplifier, QSC amplifiers, Barco Loki Cinemascope projector, and a Stewart Filmscreen masking screen, all powered and protected by a custom Torus Power All-in-One Series wall-mount power isolation unit. CinemaTech seating and Quest Acoustical Interiors round out the installation.

“We were not going to do this room without a Torus Power unit, or its equivalent. And there is no equivalent to what the Torus Power isolation transformers can accomplish in any size installation,” Erskine says.

Custom Torus Power Unit Meets Highly Specialized Requirements

Installing a reference-grade home theater within a commercial building posed several challenges, as you might expect. One of the biggest challenges was stepping-down the power to accommodate the residential gear being used.

“Originally, we planned to step the power down from 240 volts to 120 volts,” Erskine explains. “But then, the engineers who were working on the mechanical systems told us they were instead bringing 480V three-phase power into the building so we needed to drop that down to 120 volts.”

Erskine called Torus Power’s Kevin Main and asked about possible solutions for this part of the project. From this conversation, a custom All-in-One (AIO) Series 11.8K-480V to 120V step-down wall-mount isolation transformer was developed. The Torus Power unit includes 24 x 20Amp breakers, enough to accommodate all the high-end AV components within the theater.

The audio system includes Procella P815 left-center-right speakers, four Procella P18 subwoofers, and 16 additional Procella speakers for 3D surround sound, processed by a Trinnov Audio Altitude32 AV preamplifier rendering 30 channels of Dolby Atmos. The Torus Power AIO unit delivers clean power to ensure the top-of-the-line system can perform at its best. The AIO unit decouples and isolates electronic components from the power source, eliminating transients and improving audio quality. The result is a dramatically reduced noise floor with better dynamics, imaging, and base attack.

“By combining advanced room isolation design with high-performance components and clean power delivered by the Torus Power AIO unit we have been able to achieve a dynamic experience that is second to none and worthy of being an industry showcase,” says Erskine.

Similarly, the Torus Power unit is designed to power and protect the Barco Loki projector, eliciting brighter colors, deeper blacks, better contrast, and a more captivating overall image from what is already one of the industry’s best projectors.

“Providing a steady stream of ample, clean power allows the projector to perform at its very best and prevents it from being compromised. The Torus Power AIO absolutely fits the bill.”

The Barco Loki projector is paired with a 206-inch by 96-inch motorized masking screen from Stewart Filmscreen that brings the theater experience to life.

Creating a Space to Showcase the Best of the Custom Installation Industry

The Torus Power AIO unit is big and heavy, requiring six people to carry it to its permanent location, and it was custom-designed to power and protect one of the most culturally significant reference home theaters in operation today.

“When CEDIA decided to build a new headquarters, the organization knew it wanted expanded training space and something that CEDIA has never had – which is an experience center,” Erskine says.

CEDIA members can take prospective customers on a tour of the 3,000-square-foot environment to showcase state-of-the-art smart home and AV systems in a living room, bedroom, and the home theater. More importantly, dealers and consumers, alike, can see what is possible with today’s technology, observing best practices that should be employed in luxury home installations.

The Experience Center is only one-tenth of the new CEDIA headquarters. The organization occupies 30,000 square feet on the first and third floors of the building. CEDIA rents out the rest of the office space, turning the headquarters into a revenue stream instead of an added expense.

The presence of additional office space in the building, however, created soundproofing challenges within the theater. To ensure the 3D surround sound, designed to create an immersive theater experience, didn’t disturb CEDIA workers or other tenants in the building, the theater was constructed within a concrete shell. The Erskine Group added engineered acoustic treatments from Quest Acoustical Interiors to help keep sound within the room while providing smooth, even coverage in every seat.

The final result was an isolated room with a noise floor measuring less than 19 decibels. Considering the softest sound recorded is 22 decibels and akin to that of leaves rustling, you can easily get a sense of how quiet this room is. “When the door closes you can literally feel how quiet the room is!” says Erskine.

Meeting Commercial Code Regulations in a Residential Space

To meet commercial building code requirements, an “Exit” sign hangs over the door next to the screen – just as in a commercial theater – and one of the seats in the first row was eliminated to preserve space for handicapped seating.

As a safety measure and as an example of what’s possible, The Erskine Group tied the smoke and fire alarm system to the theater’s audio system. In case of emergency, theater occupants will hear alarms and notifications. The room also includes its own wireless access point to ensure a strong Wi-Fi signal for guests in the theater.

Erskine also had safety in mind when he specified commercial-grade Socapex cables to connect AV components to the Torus Power AIO unit. The cables carry six circuits, enabling The Erskine Group to reduce the number of electrical wires running from the wall across the floor to the rack from 18 to just three.

Normally used in professional applications like performance halls and Broadway theaters, the Socapex cables minimize the possibility of someone tripping over a wire and either unplugging the systems in the middle of a movie or hurting themselves. The cables lock together for added stability and security.

Erskine says he would recommend Socapex cables “for half a million-dollar rooms and above,” as they are cost-prohibitive for most installations. But, as with the other components, the CEDIA reference-grade home theater required the best the industry could provide.

A Movie Experience Like No Other

The much-anticipated CEDIA Reference Theater showcases what is possible with today’s technology. Delivering clean, stable power at a consistent 120 volts, the Torus Power AIO unit maximizes the performance capabilities of the best-in-class equipment to achieve what some may call the most immersive home theater experience available anywhere.

Torus Power, maker of uncompromising, clean, isolation transformer-based power components for AV systems, will unveil a its new POWERBLOCK (PB) Series of toroidal isolation transformers at InfoComm 2018, June 6–8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, booth N2834. With the introduction of the versatile, compact, yet rugged POWERBLOCK transformers, Torus Power brings a unique midrange product line that improves AV system performance and provides protection for small yet sophisticated commercial installations.

“We are thrilled to be back at InfoComm. It means that with the proliferation of higher performance technology like hi-res audio and 4K+ video, clients are demanding perfection from their equipment investment,” says Kevin Main, COO and President of Torus Power. “That perfection is attainable if you have a solid power foundation that is completely isolated from the power supply. The difference is something you can see and hear in everything from recording studios to small conference rooms to large venues.”

Isolated Components Deliver Superior Audio and Video Quality and Protection POWERBLOCK delivers clean, uninterrupted power to commercial AV systems that don’t require the brawn of full-size Torus AVR or WM units. However, the PB Series still includes some of the very best of Torus tech. Time-tested technology such as surge suppression and noise filtering through proprietary narrow bandwidth technology (NBT) allow sophisticated audio-visual components to deliver superior performance. Audio comes alive with a lower noise floor, better dynamics, imaging and bass, and video is notably crisper with brighter colors, deeper blacks, and a more compelling overall image.

The new POWERBLOCK PB 10 isolates outlet pairs to separate source components from power components for a cleaner signal, resulting in an enhanced audio video experience. PB 10 models are designed for 60 Hz markets using 120V and boast a small footprint weighing just 35 lbs, making them easy to fit in any system.

For smaller applications where it’s only necessary to protect a few source components, speakers, a TV, or a projector, the POWERBLOCK PB 5 offers enough outlets to plug in the most expensive AV equipment in a system, protecting these components and improving the audio video quality within a limited budget. Like its slightly larger counterpart, the PB 5 operates at 60 Hz with an input voltage of 120V, and weighs just 25 lbs.

Protecting AV Investments
High-end projects demand the ultimate in power protection. Integrators can’t afford to leave equipment unprotected and vulnerable to harmful power conditions. But smaller systems also represent a significant investment. That’s why even POWERBLOCK uses a toroidal isolation transformer to physically decouple the equipment from the power supply, delivering safer, cleaner power for sophisticated AV systems with a substantially lower noise floor. Resulting performance benefits are noticeable, compelling, and appealing.

“We’ve taken a virtual ‘shrink ray’ to our big and heavy toroidal transformer, enabling us to offer a lightweight, compact unit that powers and protects AV components in applications where our full-size power products aren’t necessary,” says Main. “The benefits to isolating power for a clean signal to dramatically improve audio and video performance are well-documented. Now even smaller home theater systems and two-channel audio applications can enjoy enhanced performance and superior protection.”

InfoComm 2018: Torus Power Isolation Transformers Provide Significant Performance Benefits for Commercial AV Systems

Torus Power’s InfoComm exhibit will showcase the dramatic improvement a stable power foundation can make in AV systems of all sizes

Toronto, ON, Canada (May 2018) Torus Power will showcase the performance benefits toroidal isolation brings to commercial applications during InfoComm 2018, taking place June 6–8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in booth #N2834. By exhibiting at InfoComm, Torus confirms its commitment to the commercial market with proven toroidal technology for commercial applications of any size. There, Torus will showcase its full line of toroidal isolation transformers, from the powerful and robust Wall Mount (WM) line to the versatile, lightweight, and compact POWERBLOCK (PB) units.

Today’s Commercial AV Systems Need Clean, Consistent Power to Perform
In commercial applications, an effective power foundation is key to leveling the playing field and making sure that any equipment in your system is performing at its optimal level.

“Having isolated, clean power is like building a good foundation for a property. If you don’t start with power and build upon that, then your system will never perform to its maximum capabilities. It’s just that simple,” says Kevin Main, President and COO of Torus Power. “Whether it’s a mission critical environment like a recording studio,a large-scale integration like digital signage, and something as simple as a conference room, integrators should make sure they are giving the equipment they install the best possible chance to perform to itorus-power-infocomm 2018ts best capability.”

Built in a variety of configurations to accommodate the needs of commercial AV applications of virtually any size, Torus Power delivers clean, uninterrupted power for today’s most demanding projects.Time-tested technology such as Series Mode Surge Suppression and noise filtering through proprietary Narrow Bandwidth Technology (NBT) allow sophisticated audio-visual components to deliver superior performance. Audio comes alive with a lower noise floor, better dynamics, imaging and bass, and video is notably crisper with brighter colors, deeper blacks, and a more compelling overall image.

Additionally, when installing expansive and expensive systems as typically found in commercial spaces, integrators can’t afford to leave equipment unprotected and vulnerable to harmful power conditions. That’s why Torus Power uses a toroidal isolation transformer to physically decouple the equipment from the power supply, delivering safer, cleaner power for sophisticated AV systems with a substantially low noise floor. Resulting performance benefits are noticeable, compelling, and appealing.

For instance, John Mayfield, owner of renowned Nashville studio Mayfield Mastering, recently installed a Torus Power unit and noticed significant improvements in the audio quality of his $80,000 powered speaker system. “I built the room in 2003, and it has never sounded better. I don’t know of any system that’s better at this point,” says Mayfield.

At InfoComm 2018, Torus will demonstrate a wide variety of toroidal isolation transformers for applications across vertical commercial markets including education, house of worship, corporate, government, entertainment, retail, broadcast studios, healthcare and more. These lines include:

POWERBLOCK (PB) Series – The new Torus POWERBLOCK (PB) Series of isolation transformers brings enhanced performance and protection to even the smallest AV systems. The PB series takes all of the best Torus tech and ports it into compact and lightweight units. The new PB 4 isolates outlet pairs to separate source components from power components for a cleaner signal and exceptional audio-visual experience. The smaller PB 2 is perfect for applications where only a few critical components need superior protection and power isolation.

Wall Mount (WM) Series – Designed for larger projects with 240V input, the Wall-Mount series packs all the features of Torus Power’s rack mount units into a system that provides a source of clean, uninterrupted power for large installations or applications with no rack space to spare. At InfoComm, Torus Power will display its WM 60 BAL AVR2 TVSS, a toroidal isolation transformer that feeds up to eight racks with 60V output and features cloud-based monitoring, automatic voltage regulation, and transient voltage surge suppression. The TVSS device responds in under five nanoseconds to manage surges up to 80,000 amps, while offering additional noise filtration of EMI and RFI.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) Series – Fluctuating voltage conditions can adversely affect sound and image quality and shorten the life of AV equipment. Torus Power AVR units, including the AVR, AVR 2, and TOT AVR, employ automatic voltage regulation to provide superior protection from voltage sags, surges, and brownouts. Stacked with features including Ethernet control and IP addressability for remote monitoring and management, the AVR2 20 RK isolation transformers enhance the performance of any commercial AV system, while protecting equipment from surges, spikes, and brownouts that can be caused by a variable grid.

TOT Series  – The award-winning little brother to the AVR series, the TOT AVR delivers the same robust feature-set at a more affordable price. Housed in a compact, 2U chassis, the TOT AVR is rated at 4 amps and is designed for smaller AV systems requiring optimal performance and consistency. AVR units keep connected equipment within the optimal operating range of 115 to 125 volts, with an input voltage of 90V to 130V +/-10V, regardless of line voltage fluctuations.

Mayfield Mastering Chooses Torus to Power and Protect High-End Monitor System in World-Famous Studio

Mayfield Mastering Chooses Torus to Power and Protect High-End Monitor System in World-Famous Studio

Torus Power RM 45 BAL isolation transformer helps mastering facility deliver pristine, consistent sound to top recording artists while protecting the studio’s investment in high-end equipment.

When John Mayfield, owner and founder of Nashville-based Mayfield Mastering, became one of the first studio engineers in the world to install the MB3-XBD-A 3-way active main monitor system from PMC, he knew he had to protect his investment. On the recommendation of PMC USA’s President of Sales and Marketing Maurice Patist, Mayfield turned to Torus Power to deliver the pristine sound quality these best-in-class speakers are capable of, as well as protect the system from the effects of harmful power events, including power spikes, surges, and lightning.

“The PMC MB3 system retails for about $80,000 and is designed to deliver clear and transparent sound, so you want to make sure that every component involved in the system is perfect,” says Mayfield. “Just as you wouldn’t buy a house without homeowners’ insurance, you can’t put this system in without some kind of protection—and it’s got to be the best protection you can buy.”

Patist connected Mayfield with legendary technical engineer Arthur Kelm—CEO of Ground One AV consulting group and VP of Engineering for Capitol Studios—who spent some time listening to the finely tuned room before helping Mayfield select the right Torus Power unit for the application.

Kelm suggested the Torus Power RM 45 BAL to power and protect the integrated Class-D amplifiers that are part of the MB3 active system. Working closely with the studio’s electrician, Kelm recommended running a fresh 240-volt feed off the breaker box, through the RM 45 BAL, and feeding that directly into the amplifiers for clean, uninterrupted power.

Mayfield, a first-time Torus Power user, says he’s been impressed with the consistent performance the RM 45 delivers. “I put an analog voltmeter on the unit, and it has been sitting at 125 volts. It hasn’t moved one iota since the day we put it in.”

Just In Case Lightning Strikes Twice

The RM 45 features Torus Power’s proprietary Narrow Bandwidth Technology (NBT) for noise filtering, high instantaneous current capability, and toroidal isolation to deliver pure, isolated power regardless of line conditions. It also provides superior protection against power surges and lightning. This last feature was critical in Mayfield’s selection of a Torus Power unit as the building that houses the studio experienced a devastating lightning strike 10 years ago. The resulting power surge destroyed two amplifiers and several other electronic components. “I don’t ever want to be involved in that kind of experience again,” Mayfield says.

Although the studio’s equipment is protected, monetarily, by an insurance policy, building the custom PMC units for replacement and having them shipped from England could take months, potentially sending Mayfield’s business to its knees. With a constant flow of big-name recording artists relying on the technology and talent within the Mayfield Mastering studio, the facility simply could not be out of service for any period of time.

“If lightning were to strike and take the system out, again, it would be devastating,” says Mayfield. “The Torus Power unit ensures that’s never going to happen to me again. I can sleep at night now.”

Clean, Consistent Mastering Every Time

While the initial impetus for the upgrade revolved around protecting Mayfield’s significant investment in the PMC system, he also sought to preserve the integrity of the masters created in his highly respected studio.

Mayfield Mastering works with hundreds of hours of recordings on a given day. Any system inconsistencies could affect the final product, coloring the master mix in a way that diminishes the original recording. “The Torus Power RM 45 BAL unit ensures that the PMC amplifiers are fed with the purest power money can buy. Thus ensuring their optimum performance day after day. That’s the consistency I need,” says Mayfield. “I built the room in 2003, and it has never sounded better. I don’t know of any system that’s better at this point.”

With a room that already sounded “incredible,” as Mayfield described it, he wasn’t sure that any improvement was possible, let alone expecting to hear a tangible improvement in the sound quality. When the Torus Power RM 45 BAL was installed, Mayfield was surprised and pleased to hear the difference, particularly a tighter bottom end. “When you get to this level, you can only make improvements in small and expensive steps,” he says. “I’ve finally got the perfect studio.”

The Right Components Make Work More Fun
John Mayfield has been in the audio industry since 1974 as a recording and mix engineer. He started Mayfield Mastering in 1996, thinking that focusing on the mastering end of the business would allow him to work fewer hours.

While that hasn’t been the case, he’s not complaining about the long days. In fact, he seems to be having more fun than ever with his state-of-the-art monitoring system protected and perfected by Torus Power.

The industry veteran has almost childlike joy in his voice when he concludes, “I’ve got the best system that technology and the industry can provide—and it’s just so much fun to work!”
