Screen Innovations’ Slate Screen Stands the Test of Time

This magnificent media room doubled in size, but the original 133-inch Slate screen didn’t budge.

The Challenge
A dramatic room transformation often calls for an AV update; when a room is stripped down to the studs, how could you not install a bigger projection screen?  Although granted an amazing opportunity to upsell their client, the integrators at Elite Audio Video in McKinney, Texas, elected to stand by the tried-and-true Slate screen from Screen Innovations that previously served the room so well. “We had installed a 133-inch Slate acoustically-transparent screen in the home theater originally. Neither the owner nor our team saw any reason to replace it. He was extremely happy with the size and imaging from day one, so we kept it,” explains the owner of Elite Audio Video, Justin Dohman.

Plus, the Elite Audio Video team needed to focus on other aspects of the remodel: the entire room would be reconstructed and redesigned, adding significant square footage to the existing footprint. “The owner wanted a more open, spacious feel, with a new bar area, complemented by a 75-inch Sony display, and a third panel of fiber optic stars added to the ceiling,” says Dohman. “What he didn’t want to change is the screen or the projector! It stood the test of time; it would also stand up to all the extra LED lighting we installed during the renovation.” The SI Slate screen, along with all other AV components, was removed temporarily from the space during the remodel, reinstalled and recalibrated afterward.

The Solution
Elite Audio Video had the unique opportunity to do the same job twice, yet thanks to their “future-proof” approach to AV, most of the original equipment passed muster for the second iteration of this contemporary, cutting-edge media room. Natural sunlight and color-changing RGB lighting dominate the space per the owners’ request, making Slate’s Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) properties and high gain, a huge benefit. The Slate material is so effective at rejecting light, Elite Audio Video was able to deliver an extra visual punch by framing the screen with LED tape lighting. The owner can alter the hue on a whim from a Control4 Neeo remote, while the projected image stays sharp and crisp. The screen’s acoustical transparency further suited the owner’s sense of style. The Origin Acoustics speakers easily tucked in the wall behind the screen material, maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic and making the on-screen action totally immersive.

The screen and JVC projector spring to life at the tap of a button of the Neeo remote, while the lights adjust to the entertainment du jour. For the Buffalo Bills football player, footage from past games often takes center stage, accentuated by signature red and blue lighting. A “Party” button offers a rainbow of hues from which to choose, and “Movie” fades all but the LED tape lighting around the screen, illuminating a vibrant blue hue. No matter what the JVC projector throws at the screen or how brightly the room lights shine, SI’s Slate acoustically transparent, Ambient Light Rejecting screen delivers an outstanding entertainment experience— for the second time around.

D-Tools Kicks Off 25th Anniversary, Showcases New Features and Capabilities to its Business Software Solutions at ISE 2023

D-Tools’ business management software continues to evolve to help systems integrators improve day-to-day business operations, streamline workflow and boost profitability.

CONCORD, CA and BARCELONA, SPAIN — January 10, 2023 — D-Tools, Inc., the leading provider of core business management software catering to the needs of the systems integration market for 25 years continues to improve and refine its suite of solutions for better business operations and productivity across all departments within an organization. These exciting new features and capabilities to D-Tools’ latest version of its flagship on-premise System Integrator (SI) Software and next-generation Cloud platform will be demonstrated to ISE attendees at the collaborative Technology Integration Partners exhibit, Stand #2K500. The availability of both on-premise and cloud-based software affords integrators a choice for every application.

D-Tools Cloud-Based Business Management Software Now Supports Chat, Complete Service Management Suite

D-Tools is extending its Cloud-based software to include a complete service management suite, which enables residential systems integrators to create, sell, and manage service plans with ease and efficiency. Service plans generate recurring revenue opportunities for integrators while improving the client experience. As part of the service offering, service plans can be designed in advance or configured on-the-fly and presented as an option on a project proposal or sold as a separate contract. Whether issued against a service agreement or as a one-off service call, service orders offer users the ability to schedule resources, document the problem found and work performed, track their time, invoice, and even collect payment right on-site all from a mobile device.

Available to integrators in the U.K., this web-based multi-OS solution facilitates communication and collaboration across an integrator’s entire workforce. A recent addition to the software that makes communication within a company even more efficient is the support of chat. Members of an integration team can now communicate and collaborate in real-time—no more waiting for answers to questions that can delay projects.

Additionally, D-Tools Cloud expedites the generation and throughput of proposals, enabling integrators to close deals faster and move on to the next project. The platform’s facilitation of dynamic, engaging multimedia proposals and browser-based visual quoting enables closer collaboration with clients, leading to prompt e-sign approval, deposits and close rates. D-Tools Cloud’s post-sales capabilities, including scheduling, project planning, task management and time tracking help integrators finish jobs on time and within budget.

D-Tools Showcases Newest Generation of D-Tools System Integrator (SI), Version 20

At ISE 2023 D-Tools will also demonstrate System Integrator (SI) version 20, which provides a suite of powerful new sales, project and field service capabilities to improve operating efficiency for systems integration businesses. SI v20 supports integration with Azure Active Directory (AAS), which provides Single Sign-On and enhanced security. Also implemented to help systems integrators drive productivity and boost bottom-line results are improvements to Pricing and Labor, including the ability to add multiple vendors and labor types to products; Purchasing and Field Service management; and the performance of features including projects, tasks, checklists, workflow rules, and more.

What Does the Future of Marketing Look Like?

From conversational marketing to emotional engagement, here are a handful of top trends.

A lot of the columns I write here in Residential Systems are about the state of affairs in marketing as they are now and trends that we are seeing currently both with our clients and within the industry. Equally as important, and as we move into the new year, is what is next for your marketing future. Here, we’ve put together a few trends that are developing in the marketing world that should prove to be prominent in the near future. Start thinking about these concepts and where they might fit into your strategy as you begin planning for Q1 marketing and beyond!

#1 Two-Way Conversations. Conversational marketing is two-way communication during a real-time conversation. It might be chatting with someone who is visiting your website with the goal of not only helping them but converting them into leads. This kind of marketing is fantastic because it is nearly instantaneous. You don’t have to wait for someone to, say, fill out a form in order to engage. By chatting with website visitors, you can help figure out what they need right away and create a better experience between your brand and your customers.

It also puts the customer at the center of the conversation instead of everything being about selling your products and services. Another huge benefit is that it takes the onus of your sales staff via early prospecting and information discovery. You’ve seen chatbots that do this on websites you visit, no doubt. Amazon is a good example of chatbots that are used to help resolve support issues.

Using chatbots to help guide your web visitors can be beneficial, but real people on the other end of the two-way communication between brand and consumer is almost always a better experience for the customer. It helps resolve customer support issues and establishes trust, generally humanizing the experience. Want to dip your toe in the water? Try using conversational marketing for something like support and see how your web visitors respond.

#2 Emotional Connection and Empathy. You might wonder how these two things are related to marketing. These days, they are everything! The perception of your brand begins and ends in the minds of your customers, and if they don’t feel like you are connecting with them on an authentic and emotional level with a deep understanding of what they are going through, you will lose them.

Customers demand personalization and to feel connected with the brands they choose. We’ve written many columns on this in the past, such as “Be a Brand to Believe In” [Residential Systems, June 2021], where you can get more detail. In short, there can be no disparity between your storytelling and your company’s actual beliefs and principles. Consumers can see right through posturing and will only be loyal to those brands that walk the walk. Every ounce of marketing that you do should ultimately align with the company’s core values.

If a customer is unhappy, this is where that two-way conversation can come in. Apologizing for their experience, empathizing, and trying to correct the situation will put you on the path to making it better, both via live chat and even publicly in social media comments. There is a degree of emotional intelligence required here, but it’s crucial that you coach your employees or anyone communicating on your behalf about your company’s best practices for communication. Those best practices need to be customized, of course, so they don’t sound like scripts and don’t come off as disingenuous or inauthentic.

#3 Social Media Optimization.  SEO (Search Engine Optimization) should be part of every marketer’s strategy. We preach this constantly at KMB. Finding customers organically is changing, however. And although indirect, there is a definite link between SEO and social media. For example, social media influences SEO because it can drive quality (high-authority) traffic to your website, which improves your rankings in search engines. This means you must create quality content that drives people to want to click. Social media messages should be intriguing and well-crafted, but, beyond this, the subject matter you are linking to on your website needs to be equally captivating. Design your content to attract people and they will come, and hopefully, your following will become brand advocates to help further engagement with your brand and your content.

It goes without saying but is worth mentioning that social media is really the pulse of your organization. It has never been more important for brands to engage on social. Take whatever time and resources you have been putting toward social and double them. Then see where you are. The proof is in the traffic, the buzz, and, ultimately, the sales. You can get better results from your social media if you align keyword research with your social media posts, share your best, highest-traffic web content on social media platforms, optimize your images for social using the 80 percent image/20 percent text rule, and tag, tag, TAG everyone you mention in both images where you can AND in the social post itself! This takes time but encourages sharing, and, obviously, increases the number of people who will see your post and click your link.

Optimize your social media profiles, as well, making yours engaging, informative, and professional, and make it easy to contact you!

We know it can be overwhelming to stay up to date with the pace of today’s innovative marketing strategies and to deploy them. We can help. Drop me a line at [email protected].

Listen EVERYWHERE Helps Student Fully Participate in Musical Theater

Audio-over-Wi-Fi assistive listening system makes high school production of Anastasia accessible to actor with hearing loss

BLUFFDALE, UTAH – January 5, 2023Listen Technologies Corporation, a leading provider of wireless listening solutions for 24 years, is proud to report that Listen EVERYWHERE has helped a high school student with hearing loss participate more fully in his school’s musical theater production of Anastasia.

Fremont High School (Plain City, Utah) Senior Hayden Reeve has a cochlear implant and utilizes an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, but that was not enough to help him keep track of lines, songs, and other stage cues. For previous productions at other schools, Reeve would resign to signing just one musical piece because it was too difficult to keep up with everything happening on and off the stage.

Paco Aguilar, a manufacturer’s representative and former Broadway sound engineer who consulted with Reeve’s teachers at Fremont High School, suggested the Listen EVERYWHERE assistive listening system to assist Reeve in participating more fully in productions. Listen EVERYWHERE streams live or recorded venue audio over Wi-Fi to smartphones.

Happy to “Feel Included”

Aguilar set up a two-channel Listen EVERYWHERE server backstage and connected the mic source. Reeve downloaded the Listen EVERYWHERE app on his smartphone to access the streamed audio from the same mic source.

In early rehearsals, the mic source was usually the director or whoever was leading the rehearsal and giving students direction. As the show’s opening date approached, the mic source connected to the main characters so Reeve could follow along and get his stage cues. Reeve carried his phone in a chest pocket on a t-shirt he wore under his costume. A Listen EVERYWHERE neck loop under Reeve’s costume plugged into his smartphone and transmitted sound to his cochlear implant.

Reeve could hear well enough that he performed multiple parts (comrade, peasant, Russian person, reporter, and member of the Secret Royal Guard) in the technical production. He also signed in ASL for the group songs.

“Before I came to Fremont High School, I really couldn’t hear music that well. It wasn’t easy to provide ASL to the musical numbers at my other school because I couldn’t hear the words over the music,” said Reeve. Listen EVERYWHERE helped Reeve overcome those listening challenges and fully engage in the performance. “I’ve been so happy to be able to participate more and feel included in the production.”

Engaging the Audience
With Listen EVERYWHERE, Reeve could hear what was happening throughout the musical, letting him fully participate and add his talents to the production. The school even hosted a “hard of hearing and deaf” performance with an ASL interpreter. Reeve invited his deaf community, family, and friends and had his own cheering section that night.

“We’re thrilled that Listen EVERYWHERE made it possible for Hayden to share his talents and participate fully in his school’s production of Anastasia, and more importantly, that he felt included with the entire cast, crew, and orchestra,” said Maile Keone, president and CEO of Listen Technologies. “At Listen Technologies, we’re inspired by stories like Hayden’s and continue to design and innovate solutions that foster inclusion and enable clear communication, so more people connect and engage.”
