Stewart Phantom HALR Screen Lights Up the LAVA Centre

Phantom HALR combats ambient light

One of the hottest video displays in the public sector is the newly installed 21-foot Stewart Phantom HALR screen in the Hvolsvöllur, Iceland LAVA Centre museum.

Showing UltraHD 4K content to visitors near an approximately 40-foot replica of a mantle plume, which is an upswelling of extremely hot rock that regularly explodes, the combination of the exhibit and AV technology is designed to engage an estimated 150,000 museum visitors per year.

The video portion of the exhibit features a 20-minute video loop powered by a custom-built computer that incorporates a Nvidia 1060 GPU.

The computer feeds a Vivitek DK8500Z 7,500-lumen 4K projector via HDMI, and through the use of the Phantom HALR screen and 7,500-lumen Vivitek projector, the system is able to display quality images in a room environment that features light levels high enough to allow people entering the room to safely find their seats.

Stewart Phantom HALR Remains Flexible for Different Functions

Phantom HALR good in any situation

The LAVA Centre also wanted to use the space as a multifunction room.

In order to meet the facility’s requirements, Feris Ehf, the system integrator chosen to specify and install the system, chose the Phantom HALR screen in a lace and grommet fixed frame AT 1.5 masking system configuration.

“Phantom HALR was our one-and-only choice in screen materials. The Phantom HALR provides such a bright picture that we were able to create an immersive experience.

“It really lets that Vivitek 7500-lumen 4K projector shine. Visitors forget their surroundings as they watch the lava pouring from the volcanoes on screen.”

Handling the audio side of the AV system is seven ONE Point speakers and a Danley subwoofer.

Controlling the audio system is a Peavey MediaMatrix Nion n3 processor. A Powersoft amplifier drives the speaker system’s 7.1 audio feed, which comes from the computer’s sound card.

First published on AVNetwork

ISE is the biggest audiovisual event on the planet. 2018’s showing is expected to draw more than 75,000 international visitors looking for the latest and greatest solutions. We asked Shannon Townley, CEO and president of Stewart Filmscreen, what his company plans to bring to Amsterdam.

Q&A with Shannon Townley, CEO & president, Stewart Filmscreen

AV Technology: Why ISE?
ISE is an important part of Stewart Filmscreen’s go to market strategy as it offers a unique opportunity for us to show our range of products and innovations to a global audience. Because we do business around the world, it’s important we have time, such as what ISE offers, to have meaningful one-on-one time with our partners, prospects, and peers. More important, however, is the opportunity to showcase not just what we do but how and why, which is critical considering the competitive nature of the AV industry.

AV Technology: What will you focus on at the show?
This year, Stewart Filmscreen is showcasing what’s possible with two-piece projection and really honing in on the importance of image integrity, or image fidelity, as we like to say. In the booth (or stand, as they say) we are debuting an enhanced Balon Borderless design that now features optional LED backlighting, our new Gemini dual-roller screen system, the svelte new Cascade case, and Phantom HALR, our award-winning high ambient light rejecting screen material that has quickly become a top-seller. We’ll also be talking with attendees about total cost of ownership advantages this category provides over others and other critical value propositions while sharing insights and helping people find the best Stewart solution for their most challenging installations. Anytime we’re at an event — but especially one like ISE — we are there to educate and inspire, to listen and learn, and ultimately, to help our partners specify, integrate, and manage two-piece projection technologies effectively, in a wide variety of applications.

AV Technology: What about your solutions is notable for technology managers?
Tech managers and consultants should take note not only of what’s new on the show floor but also — and maybe more importantly — what’s been proven, tried, tested, and known to work well. With 70-plus years behind us we know not only what works but also the most effective path to achieving the desired result. Because we are vertically-integrated we control every aspect of our manufacturing and production. This means we can customize a solution that is ideally suited to the application, environment, and intended use. Think about that for a minute. Think what’s possible. Then, call Stewart Filmscreen and let our team provide your team the best possible solution. That’s the Stewart Filmscreen difference.

“Go Where You Wanna Go,” With Stewart’s Balόn Borderless

Slimmer, easier to mount, and now featuring an innovative LED Light Kit, Balόn Borderless delivers an impeccable, impressive floating image appearance

TORRANCE, CA (January 25, 2018) Stewart Filmscreen®—the only two-time Academy Award® winning manufacturer of professional projection screens and projection screen materials for the audiovisual industry, continues to build upon its 70 plus year legacy in the projection screen category. During ISE 2018, Stewart will debut a newly enhanced version of Balόn™ Borderless fixed frame projection screen for the international marketplace in stand #1-F50 at the RAI Amsterdam, taking place February 6–9, 2018.

Balόn Borderless provides a contemporary “floating image” appearance. The screen’s unique beveled frame structure allows the film screen material to seamlessly wrap around the frame and snap smoothly into place, thereby eliminating any visible edge, border, or masking around the screen. Balόn Borderless utilizes Stewart Filmscreen’s EZ-Mount Bracket and Telescoping Wall Mount Systems to expedite installation and ensure a consistently level image. At only 0.97-inch (25 mm) thick, or 1.10 inches (28 mm) — if back bracing is required — and with a completely smooth side profile without any visible puckering or scalloping, Balón Borderless’ design focuses the audience’s attention on the high fidelity image presented on the screen’s surface for a more immersive entertainment experience.

Balón Borderless is available with most of Stewart Filmscreen’s application driven materials, including proprietary acoustically transparent options that enable placement of speakers behind the screen for an even cleaner looking installation. Additionally, Balόn Borderless now features an LED Light Kit that easily facilitates optional LED backlighting. Balόn Borderless helps integrators and consultants tailor each projection screen experience to best suit the needs of the user, application, and environment.

“The new Balόn Borderless screen is really an exercise in refinement,” says Shannon Townley, President and CEO of Stewart Filmscreen. “A borderless screen has to be perfect, and we’re introducing even more design details to Balόn to make it look impeccable – whether it’s lit up or not in use. Of course, you can add any of Stewart’s award winning screen materials to dial it in to the environment. We think the international audience at ISE18 will want to see this beautiful screen in action.”

Attendees of ISE 2018 are invited to see Balόn Borderless at the Stewart Filmscreen stand #1-F50 and, “Go Where You Wanna Go!”

Stewart Filmscreen’s New Gemini Dual Projection Screen System Chosen For Acoustic Evolution Showroom

The difference is night and day when two projection screens are combined in one system

TORRANCE, CA (December 7, 2017) Stewart Filmscreen®— the only two-time Academy Award®-winning manufacturer of professional projection screens and reference standard, projection screen materials for the audiovisual industry, not only debuted an impressive new dual-roller projection screen system called Gemini™ during CEDIA 2017, but also celebrated the first installation of its award-winning product at the Acoustic Evolution showroom in San Diego. Featuring Stewart’s reference standard StudioTek or SnoMatte screen materials and Phantom HALR™ high ambient light rejection screen material on two separate rollers, the Gemini screen system features a contemporary new case designed to accommodate dual aspect ratios for both HDTV (16:9) and CinemaScope (2:35:1) viewing experiences. Delivering a true big screen experience, Gemini can accommodate Phantom HALR screens up to 156-inches diagonal and StudioTek or SnoMatte screens up to 196-inches diagonal.

Gemini Plays a Starring Role in Dealer Showroom
Home technology professionals recognize the opportunity Gemini represents and say it’s the solution they’ve been looking for because it provides a simplified and superior approach to delivering a best-in-class entertainment experience, day or night. As such, Gemini was specified and installed in the San Diego showroom of Stewart Filmscreen dealer Acoustic Evolution, where it is the showroom centerpiece. Paired with a Barco Balder Cinemascope projector, the Gemini system uses a 16:9 aspect ratio Phantom HALR screen for daytime viewing, and StudioTek 100 screen in 2.35 widescreen format for nighttime movie watching.

Gemini at Acoustic Evolution Showroom - shades open

“Media rooms and open space plans are all the rage today, and Gemini gives me the capability to show large-format video, along with the ability to watch movies in these areas,” says Allen Tremble of Acoustic Evolution. “Being motorized makes the system especially appealing. It’s there when you need it and rolls up, out of the way, when not in use. Now you see it, now you don’t,” Tremble adds. “It’s also an easy install, thanks to Gemini’s well-designed enclosure that simply drops into a framed hole.”

Recognizing it as a unique, problem-solving solution, AVS Forums awarded Gemini a Best of CEDIA Award.

Best of Both Worlds Viewing Capabilities Simplify Sales
For integrators, the introduction of Gemini presents a new opportunity to easily and effectively sell two-piece projection systems. The necessity to explain aspect ratios, content formats, and the effects of ambient light on the overall viewing experience, coupled with the necessary question “which screen material should we use?” often presents recurring challenges that complicate the sales process. Gemini solves this problem.

Because Gemini offers a screen system that provides “best of both worlds” viewing, it doesn’t matter if the customer wants to watch news or sports during the day, and movies at night. With dual screen materials and aspect ratios, Gemini means consumers no longer have to choose a single screen type to fit their viewing preference. Now, they can have it all in one projection screen system.

Stewart Filmscreen Balόn™ Borderless Also Earned Accolades at CEDIA 2017
The Gemini system shared the CEDIA spotlight with another Stewart Filmscreen innovation making its residential debut. Balόn™ Borderless, a new fixed frame projection screen, provides a contemporary, “floating image” appearance throughout the home or in dedicated theaters took home a 2017 CE Pro BEST Award in the Projection Screen category. Judges selected products based on various criteria including innovation, functionality, competitive advantages, as well as benefits to the end user and the integrator. Balόn™ Borderless also earned a Residential Systems Best of Show award, which honors outstanding products and solutions exhibited at CEDIA 2017.

Multiple award wins and enthusiastic dealer response for Stewart Filmscreen’s latest solutions stand as a testament to the company’s incredible innovation and engineering expertise. As Stewart celebrates its 70th year and the Next Generation of people, products, and technological advancements in screen design, the company encourages integrators and consumers to consider what’s possible with two-piece projection and Stewart’s timeless offerings.
