Azione Key Leaders System Designers Conference Offers Education, Insight, and New Opportunities

Azione’s March meeting puts the needs of system designers front and center, providing unique opportunities for peer-to-peer idea-sharing, networking, and education

Chester Springs, PA – (February 26, 2019) – Today’s home technology installation business is more competitive than ever. System integrators need tools that help them rise above the competition, win jobs, and be more profitable. That’s why Azione Unlimited, the only buying group conceived and focused on integrators, is holding an inaugural System Designers Conference—part of its trio of Key Leaders initiatives for 2019—March 13-14, at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas. Devoted solely to systems designers’ unique needs and challenges within the home technology industry, the Azione Key Leaders System Designers Conference brings together employees from 40 leading integrator companies across 18 states.

Dealer Presentations & Solutions

During this two-day event exclusively for Azione members, system designers will be presented with a number of educational opportunities to ultimately help them operate more efficiently, obtain growth, and be more competitive. The conference will feature several Dealer Presentations & Solutions talks, including “What Are the Biggest Challenges Of My Job?” which identifies pain points for dealers and helps them move past them to success.

Workflows & Operational Efficiency

Efficiency is important when you are trying to operate with limited on-staff resources, as is the case with many system integration firms, small and large. Chris Smith presents two insightful talks based on his own experiences as Chief Operating Officer for Cloud9 Smart. “What’s Included in a Document Set?” and “Workflow: Sales to Engineering to PM” will both help systems designers streamline day-to-day business operations and workflows for greater profitability.

Roundtables & Open Discussions

Azione has curated a number of topics for roundtables and open discussions at the System Designers conference, including:

  • The Handoff from Sales to System Design
  • Project Design Software
  • Brand & Product Selection
  • Coordinating Teams with Your Designs

These talks will give Azione members the unique ability to work with peers to find solutions to common problems, discover industry best practices and tools, and free them up to focus on other areas of their businesses.

Vendor Insights

Manufacturers have valuable insight when it comes to the best equipment for the job, margins, integration tips, and more. Azione manufacturer partners including Samsung, JL Audio, Legrand, Nortek Security & Control, Liberty AV and SurgeX are also presenting at this year’s conference as resources for Azione system designers.

“We’ve taken the time to carefully craft and curate these two days to provide maximum ROI for system designers and create valuable relationships with our esteemed vendor attendees,” says Richard Glikes, President of Azione Unlimited. “Our members are going to come away with strategic ways to improve their businesses. If you’re not an Azione member, now’s the time to think about joining as we continue to enhance our offerings for integrators.”

Azione Unlimited Gives Dealers Unique Education Opportunities and Beyond in 2019

Azione Unlimted emphasizes emerging categories such as lighting fixtures in 2019, allowing members to work more closely with designers and architects, as well as new educational meetings and factory tours

Chester Springs, PA – (December 20, 2018) – In today’s highly competitive home technology industry, delivering solutions that excite the customer while retaining margins is crucial. That’s why Azione Unlimited, in its ‘Lucky 7th’ year, is announcing a lineup of unique educational experiences, with an emphasis on key categories like lighting fixtures, providing dealer members the resources they need to deliver results and garner profits. These include:

Savant-USAI Lighting Training for Azione Unlimited Members
Savant and USAI Lighting will host Azione members at the “NYC Lighting Experience & Training,” January 9-10, 2019 at the Savant Experience Center in Soho, New York. The two-day event gives Azione members exclusive access to education on the energy industry as an emerging product category, fixtures, Savant control, system architecture and design, and the competitive landscape, as well as offers hands-on demos, products intros, and extensive networking opportunities for industry experts.

“We are committed to the lighting fixture category for 2019 and beyond because it’s important for the homeowner and it’s also profitable for our members,” says Richard Glikes, President of Azione Unlimited, the only buying group in which vendor and dealer members are equal. “We have exclusive training and programs for 2019 that will help our members capitalize on this emerging home tech category.”

More than 20 Azione dealer members have signed up for the January training thus far. As a result, a second training has been added for March 6-7, 2019.

Azione Insights Help Members Differentiate in Lighting
Azione’s 2019 Lighting Initiative builds upon momentum the group initiated in 2018. Ann Schiffer’s Inspiring Insights talk at Azione’s fall conference, the Donnée in Denver, for example, focused on Circadian lighting and how it relates to wellness. Azione Unlimited members are likewise embracing the category and enhancing their offerings with lighting fixtures and related services and support.

“I can’t speak enough about how successful and easy it has been for us to add lighting control and design to our menu of services,” said Luke Germain, President of Tune Street.  “If you are on the fence as a technology company, jump in with both feet. It will bring you closer to your architect and designer friends and help you become an intelligent voice on all projects.”

Azione Unlimited member, Kasted and its sister company DPDG understand that the interaction between light and architecture is a fundamental aspect of any design and that a good lighting design helps to communicate the identity of a space and shapes an individual’s perception of the environment. In fact, Kasted by DPDG is not only an integration firm but an architectural lighting firm and wholesale lighting fixture distributor.

Azione 2019 Events, Tours, and Education
Events like Azione’s upcoming “Fulgent Fling” Spring 2019 Conference in Florida, April 3–5, 2019, and contests like the upcoming 2019 Brand Adoption, Growth & Engagement Contest are encouraging Azione members to grow and move into new categories like lighting fixtures, and rewarding members that do.

In 2019, Azione is expanding on the success of its complimentary Key Leaders meeting by offering three separate Key Leaders meetings, each designed with a specific manager in mind, including system designers (February), operations (July), and sales managers (July).

In addition, several Azione vendor factory tour opportunities are in the works, including an exclusive tour and experience of Barco’s Belgium Campus, prior to ISE Amsterdam. While at the Spring conference, dealers are invited for a tour of JL Audio and IC Realtime’s headquarters, as well as AudioControl, during the Azione Fall Conference. Additional visits with vendor members like James Loudspeakers are in the planning stages.

Azione Advisory Board Guides the Group’s Future
Azione’s education and other initiatives are part of short and long-term plans for the organization, developed by Glikes and the Azione Advisory Board. Elected and equally representing membership with four dealer and four vendor members, the Advisory Board brings an outstanding lineup of leaders to the table to conceptualize, guide, and execute major Azione initiatives. Last month’s Board retreat in Dallas, TX, succeeded in a significant task: refreshing the vision, pillars, and mission of Azione Unlimited, reflecting the group’s evolution over the past seven years.

“The Board is a synergy of the best minds in our industry and together with Richard [Glikes], we developed the new vision of ‘Help Grow Profitable Businesses’ and the pillars of Community, Education, Purchasing Power and Business Guidance, which will be the guiding force of Azione’s conferences and programs moving forward,” said Tim Bigoness, Azione Advisory Board member and CMO of D-Tools.

The new Azione mission statement is as follows:

Be the definitive organization serving the Custom Integrator Industry that helps members grow their business through a combination of education, purchasing power, and business guidance while providing a platform for like-minded integrators and vendors to share ideas and best practices that will benefit all. And to have fun while doing so.

Azione Unlimited Announces 2018 Adoption and Growth Contest Winners

The industry’s most successful dealers and vendors share plans and ideas for 2019

In today’s highly competitive home technology industry, business success is often measured by growth. Azione Unlimited, the only buying group where vendors and members are equal partners, seeks to encourage growth while rewarding its members in tangible, memorable ways.

Most recently, the group revealed the winners of its 2018 Brand Adoption and Growth Contest, “Escape to Aruba.” The 2018 competition was an enhancement of the group’s 2017 Motivational Contest, a first of its kind in the industry. In 2017, Azione sent 24 winners and their guests to Turks and Caicos. Deemed a “Motivational Contest,” the competition promoted growth – of revenue, percent of sales, and product lines.

This year’s event focused on even more metrics that matter and fostered a sense of partnership between dealers and vendors, something that is crucial in this era of shrinking margins and commoditized technology.

With highly targeted goals and a contest structure that rewarded business growth, adoption of new lines, and renewed relationships with former vendors, the 2018 Adoption and Growth Contest inspired members to reach outside their comfort zones. At the same time, it offered the support of the group and opportunities for learning and mentorship, which studies show is a critical element to success when people try new things.

Contest Winners Adopted More Than Just New Product Lines

Winners “adopted” more than just new lines or new dealers during the contest. In their pursuit of the highest growth by dollars and by percentage, as well as more tickets – which gave participants entries into the random drawing portion of the contest – members adopted a growth mindset. Brainstorming new business strategies and tactics, dealers and vendors looked for even more creative ways to approach their businesses in 2019.

“With unprecedented participation and success this year, the Azione Adoption & Growth Contest illustrates the value of a focused effort and the benefits of being a member of a group like Azione,” says Azione Unlimited President Richard Glikes. “In fact, we’ve gotten so much support for this model that we’re bringing the contest back again in 2019 for a third year.”

During the contest, vendors saw dealers adopt innovative and highly effective business practices that will, ultimately, benefit the industry as a whole. Looking forward to 2019, Azione members and contest winners had the following to share:

For 2019, SurgeX wants to continue to build upon the messaging around every system receiving a solid power foundation. We hope our dealers see us as the only true partner in the power category, which can help in better diagnosing and addressing potential power pitfalls within any given jobsite. We would love to help more customers benefit from an uninterrupted user experience by utilizing our large format UPS solutions from 10kVA to

225kVA in mitigating the often-overtaxed infrastructure of the electrical grid.” Says Jimmy Paschke, Sales Manager for SurgeX Residential.

Eric Bodley of Future Ready Solutions adds “With the launch of 8K video and 10g networking – FIBER will be the major initiative for 2019. Now is the time for Azione members to learn how to design, install, and commission fiber optic systems – and Future Ready Solutions is the resource to accomplish it.”

Glikes concludes that “the contest provided inspiration for Azione members to go the extra mile, while networking opportunities (including the Adoption contest), panel discussions, and roundtables at Azione events throughout 2018 offered practical advice and helpful resources.”

How the Contest Worked to Reward Growth and Relationships

The contest experienced record-breaking and unprecedented participation, with 96% of all eligible dealers earning tickets in at least one of three categories:

  • 67% of dealers met vendors’ growth requirements
  • 27% of dealers met vendors’ new dealer requirements
  • 6% of dealers met vendors “re-engaged dealer” requirements

These dealers all received tickets, which were then used as chances to win the random drawing.

In addition, three Azione dealers and three Azione vendors won in categories that exemplified business growth in different ways, notably, percentage growth, dollar-value growth, and line growth.

And the Winners Are

Azione President Richard Glikes announced the winners of the 2018 contest during a Facebook Live session and the group then traveled to Aruba where 24 winners spent 5 days and 4 nights on an all-expenses-paid escape. There, attendees enjoyed the sunshine, sparkling sand, azure seas, and the companionship of other hard-working Azione members.

The winners are as follows:

  • Most $ Growth w/ AU Vendors: Advanced Home Theater
  • Most % Growth w/ AU Vendors: House Systems
  • Most Lines up 25% w/ AU Vendors: Definitive Electronics
  • Random Dealer Drawing: Echo Workshop, Connect Consulting, JD Audio and Video Design
  • Most $ Growth w/ AU Dealers: Sony
  • Most % Growth w/ AU Dealers: Future Ready Solutions
  • Most Dealers w/ 25% Growth: IC Realtime
  • Most Dealers Added: SurgeX
  • Random Vendor Drawing: Dana Innovations

“With the unprecedented participation and success of this year’s contest, there is no doubt we will continue this initiative in 2019. Who knows what exotic locale we will visit?” ponders Glikes. “One thing is certain: While the contest will continue to emphasize adoption and growth, we will also introduce another element: engagement.”

Glikes offers additional inspiration by sharing, “Members’ participation in Azione Unlimited conferences and other group meetings and initiatives offer excellent opportunities to earn additional chances to win our random drawings and achieve unprecedented success in the various growth categories of the contest, as well.”

Azione Unlimited’s Fall Conference The Donnée in Denver Offered Inspiration, Insights, Community, and Camaraderie

Chester Springs, PA – (October 24, 2018) – Azione Unlimited’s recent fall conference, The Donnée in Denver, broke-free from traditional conference offerings with new Inspiring Insights talks, small group presentations, and charity-based team-building events, complemented by plentiful networking opportunities to help build a stronger sense of community and camaraderie.

“Within the first five minutes of being at the Donnée in Denver, I was overwhelmed by the spirit of camaraderie and community. It was literally palpable, and felt like I was amidst a group of friends more than a group industry colleagues,” says Giles Sutton, Senior Vice President of Industry Engagement for CEDIA.

New for the Azione Fall Conference was a series of Inspiring Insights talks which explored a multitude of interesting topics energetically delivered by thought-provoking speakers from both inside and outside of the AV industry. Small Group presentations led by members of Azione and One-on-One sessions with Azione vendors armed attendees with sound and strategic business insights to help companies learn, grow, and overcome challenges. In all, more than 250+ like-minded individuals, including home technology professionals, manufacturers, service providers, and industry affiliates attended the event.

Inspiring Insights
Akin to a popular global speaking series, Azione’s Inspiring Insights talks were delivered by nine different speakers from a broad range of backgrounds 15 minutes to talk about a variety of topics, such as finding and keeping talent (Kathleen Brenk) and rethinking how to sell to your next customer (Tim Costello), as well as philosophical approaches like how to stop selling and start delivering joy to customers (Alex Capecelatro). Jeremy Glowacki, executive editor of Residential Tech Today gave a thought-leading talk on Blockchain and how businesses can prepare for its inevitable role in their operations. Inspiring subjects, like transforming dreams into reality were explored by Jason Romero, a legally blind man who ran across the U.S. and how to take risks in business (Eric Higgs), were a huge success with attendees. Perfect Light by Ann Shiffers covered not only how to get into the lighting category, but more importantly a deep dive into education, how and why lighting has evolved and why human-centric lighting is so important. Tim Sinnaeve discussed working more effectively with the Architecture and Design community. Eric Thies closed out the series with a powerful talk about focusing on one’s business.

Small Group Presentations
Even as Azione continues to strategically add new dealers and vendors in 2018, the buying group remains intimate, with members committed to full transparency and idea-sharing. During small group meetings, subject matter experts and dealers, alike, explored essential business concepts and shared tips. Highlighted sessions included growing your business, onboarding employees, how to run a profitable service department, using marketing to book your business, and more. One of the most heavily attended sessions was a panel led by Gretchen Gilbertson of Séura, exploring how to work with interior designers.

One-on-One Meetings
A mainstay of Azione events, one-on-one meetings allow dealers and vendors the time and space to learn about new program incentives, products, and technologies, while building stronger relationships.

“The Donnée in Denver encouraged members to consider the aspects of the industry they’ve accepted as ‘truth’ and explore whether these beliefs still hold true,” says Azione President Richard Glikes. “With the industry changing so fast, members must change the way they think about concepts like service, talent recruitment, the adoption of new technologies like AI, and forays into new markets, like lighting.”

“We hope that after the Donnée in Denver, Azione members feel stronger, more capable, and better armed with advice and actionable insights to help them navigate business and rise above any challenges they’re faced with in the future,” says Azione President Richard Glikes.

Azione Unlimited Helps Dealers Use KPIs to Transform Productivity, Profitability

Techteriors’ Sam Luckow details how choosing a Critcal One with supporting KPIs and key metrics, getting employees engaged, and celebrating success can improve an organization.

Chester Springs, PA – (August 2018) – For Wisconsin-based Techteriors, the process of becoming an agile, Key Performance Indicator-focused organization took about two and a half years of consistent effort, but the results were incredible. Techteriors’ efficiency and billable hours skyrocketed and business increased approximately 100 percent, with 23 percent less employeesSam Luckow Techteriors

A group of 60 Azione Unlimited home technology integrators and manufacturers gathered to hear fellow member Sam Luckow, Techteriors’ senior vice president, share insights on KPIs during a stand-out presentation at the buying group’s recent Key Leaders Meeting. Understanding how vital it is for dealers to have the capability to adapt in an ever-changing business environment, Azione is helping its members be more agile, flexible, and strategic.

Using Key Performance Indicators to Transform a Business
Dealers can use Key Performance Indicators as a tool to improve productivity, performance, and profitability. But creating a structured environment with well-defined roles and learning to rely on analytics and business insights takes time, patience, and the right techniques.

Many dealers are currently accustomed to an organization where individuals wear multiple hats and everyone goes from project to project without pausing to consider analytics like hours billed and job profitability.

With expertise in operations management, project management, sales, and business analysis, Luckow knows how business intelligence and analytics can positively affect an organization. He encourages Azione dealers to take the first steps and keep going because the payoffs will be worth it.

Luckow’s Azione presentation focused on 10 steps to start using KPIs. But if dealers absorbed only three key takeaways from the talk, they would be well on their way to positive change, increased employee engagement, and higher profits.

How to Get Started Using KPIs: 3 Tips from a Business Expert
Luckow emphasizes that his presentation was not a roadmap for dealers, but, instead, meant to spark ideas and discussion. “This is a snapshot in time of Techteriors,” he says, encouraging dealers to hire a business coach or an analyst if they feel an outsider can help guide them down the path.

1. Identify the “Critical One.”
Luckow calls that one area where a business needs the most improvement the “Critical One.” For AV integrators, the Critical One is often profitability, customer service, or employee engagement. Once an integrator has identified “the One,” the next step is determining which KPIs can help improve that “One,” and, from there, determining the metrics to assess the KPIs.

2. Start measuring.
Luckow encourages organizations to start small. When he first introduced KPIs to Techteriors, the organization only focused on tracking time. “Once we started getting accurate time entries, we could start measuring the things that mattered.”

When it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty of tracking real KPIs, Luckow advises, “Pick something that’s easily measurable that will resonate with employees quickly.”

3.Reward success.
Luckow believes in absolute transparency at Techteriors, which means every employee receives access to all KPIs and analytics every Tuesday. Wins are celebrated, while losses are analyzed.

Most importantly, says Luckow, “Everybody in the entire organization is compensated toward our Critical One. So how they’re doing on their individual metrics defines what they’re total possible bonus would be.”

Azione Continues to Inspire and Educate Dealers
Luckow’s presentation at the Key Leaders meeting encouraged dealers to start thinking about KPIs and how focusing on business intelligence could help them scale their company. Azione’s upcoming Fall Conference in Denver promises to dive deeper into KPIs and management styles to help dealers find a business system that works for them.

“Azione has always been about more than just the technology. The programming at our Key Leaders Meeting, along with the seminars, presentations, and roundtables we have planned for our Fall Conference will offer tangible tips and actionable insights our dealers can use to weather any market changes and grow profitably,” says Azione Unlimited President Richard Glikes.
